A NORTH EAST takeaway and cafe has been given a brand new hygiene rating after suffering from the lowest possible score earlier this year.

The Goodfillas venue on Hylton Road in Sunderland was told to make urgent improvements after being given a zero star hygiene rating on August 26.

The venue saw poor feedback across all key areas including how food is handled, the cleanliness and condition of facilities and management of food safety.

It comes as 16 businesses across the region were recently handed a one or zero star hygiene rating after conditions prompted damning reports from inspectors.

But confirming that Goodfillas had been given a new food hygiene rating in recent days, the owner said there had been improvements across the main categories.

Confirmation of the new rating, seen by The Echo, confirmed it had now been given a three - which means the premises is "satisfactory" in meeting requirements.

It is understood that the score should be updated on the Food Standards Agency website in coming days.
