AN innovative surf therapy programme is expanding in North Yorkshire as a charity has taken over the lease of the ‘bullring’ site at Scarborough's Aquarium Top.

The Wave Project has announced plans to create two bespoke regenerated units at the site to launch a new location offering surf therapy to vulnerable young people.

It will allow for adaptive surfing for those aged eight to 18 with impairments or disabilities to be referred through local partners.

The site has been altered to ensure full accessibility for disabled people, offering level slipway access to the water’s edge, as well as disabled parking nearby.

The Wave Project’s existing surf therapy sessions in Scarborough run from Spring through to Autumn each year.

Refurbishment of the new site has now been completed, with referrals and bookings to commence in Spring 2022.

Matt Jones, coordinator in North Yorkshire for The Wave Project, said they were 'delighted' with the new site, adding: "Our vision is to make surfing as accessible and inclusive as possible.”

The site is being leased to the charity by Scarborough Borough Council and local tradespeople and builders’ merchants are being called on to support on fitting out the unit over the winter.
