CATHEDRAL-GOERS were ‘over the moon’ to hear a new take on the pioneering US moon mission of 1969.

Dr Andy Aldrin, the son of astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who was a pilot on the Eagle module on the Apollo 11 lunar landing, gave a free, family friendly talk to an audience of 300 at Durham Cathedral.

Staged as part of the cathedral’s Museum of the Moon installation, Monday’s talk by the animated Dr Aldrin featured his experience of growing up with an astronaut father, the second man on the moon behind colleague Neil Armstrong, and his dreams of the future of space exploration.

As well as answering questions from children and adults in the audience, he shared his passion for educating the next generation of explorers, and the best ways to engage today’s students in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) subjects.

Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon installation can be viewed at the cathedral until November 11.
