DARLINGTON students from Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College have made a display for this year’s Poppy Appeal for local men who lost their lives in war, ahead of Remembrance Day.

The theme of the display is “Behind every name, a story.”

Every poppy is named in memory of a Darlington man who lost his life in either the first or second world war.

For every poppy there is the name, regiment and a short backstory of a local man.

QE Interact Club Coordinator, Nancy Wall, said: “We did this as many young people are not aware of the war(s) and how many lives it touched.

“Wars touch the lives of all ages, all races, all social classes. Many Darlington men were killed in action, and many were wounded and returned forced to live the rest of their lives with the physical and mental scars of war. For those of us born during peacetime, all wars seem far removed from our daily lives. This was our opportunity to show our respect for those who gave their lives to allow us to live as we do, and to pay our respects to the men of our town who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

The display will be in QE’s library until Remembrance Sunday, November 14.
