A DISQUALIFIED driver caught behind the wheel of an Audi TT with dodgy number plates on has been jailed for six months.

Christopher Walker was spotted driving the car by a police officer who recognised him as a banned driver.

When the 55-year-old was arrested the car he claimed belonged to his was also seized for him having no insurance, Teesside Crown Court heard.

Walker then attended a police station with his son in tow and convinced an officer it was insured but when he tried to pick it up from the pound it was noticed that the number plate didn't correspond with the vehicle's identification numbers.

Jonathan Gittins, prosecuting, said Walker was currently serving a suspended sentence for similar offences.

Walker, of Stanmore Avenue, pleaded guilty to fraudulent use of a registration plate, fraud by false representation, driving whilst disqualified and driving without insurance.

Uzma Khan, in mitigation; said her client maintains it was a 'genuine' mistake and urged the judge to impose a suspended sentence.

Judge Christopher Smith dismissed the defendant's claim it was an accident and jailed him for a total of six months for showing 'a complete disregard for the rules of the road' and for breaching his suspended sentence.

Walker was banned for driving for 21 months.
