AN Arriva bus carrying passengers was involved in a crash in a County Durham town centre at the weekend.

The bus, operated by Arriva North East, was involved in a crash with a Nissan Navara in Bishop Auckland at around 4pm on Sunday.

Pictures showed how both vehicles had been left with significant damage and the road strewn with debris from the front end of the bus.

The incident took place at the crossroads junction on Newgate Street which links Princes Street with South Church Road.

At the time, it was understood the emergency services attended the scene, while both vehicles were later recovered and the road reopened that afternoon.

But providing an update on Monday, police confirmed to The Northern Echo that a number of passengers onboard the bus received minor injuries.

A spokesperson for Durham Police said: "Police were called to reports of a two vehicle collision in Bishop Auckland at 4pm yesterday afternoon.

"The incident which occurred on Newgate Street involved a single decker bus and a silver Nissan Navara.

"The passengers received minor injuries and were checked over at the scene.

"Both vehicles were recovered and the road is now open."

Arriva North East and the North East Ambulance Service have been approached for comment.
