TWO businesswoman who have been running a popular hair salon for 20 years held a special celebration to mark the occasion.

Sarah Doudican, from Darlington, and Michelle Vickers, from Ingleton, in Teesdale, held the event at their Winroths Hair Salon, in Darlington, on Saturday.

The hairdressers, who have been working at the salon for more than 30 years, had a visit from Barbara Winroth, from whom they took over the business from in 2001, as well as Mayor of Darlington Cyndi Hughes.

They welcomed clients with sparkling wine to celebrate the occasion and enjoyed live entertainment by local band The Wayne’s in Clark's Yard.

Sarah and Michelle started working at the salon more than 30 years ago, when they became Barbara's apprentices.

Michelle said: “We consider ourselves very lucky to have survived the last few years and would like to thank our lovely, loyal stylists Sharon, Sarah, Sam, as well as all of our fantastic clients for their continued support.

Sarah added: “We wouldn’t be here without them.”

The salon has been a hairdressers for more than half a century and was owned by several people in the 1960s before Mrs Winroth took it over, running it for more than 30 years.

The front of the salon has recently undergone a refurbishment as part of a Darlington Borough Council scheme to improve the shopping environment in the town's yards.
