A DARLINGTON restaurant, which saw more than a dozen failings including raw meat stored incorrectly and dirty equipment, has been given a much-improved hygiene rating.

Akbar Dynasty, located off the A66 in Sadberge, was told to make "major improvements" after inspectors slammed food hygiene levels during an inspection in March, this year.

At the time, inspectors found the conditions so poor the restaurant was handed a one star food hygiene rating with concerns raised across all three categories.

But several months on, the restaurant has been given a much-improved hygiene rating, something which bosses has vowed to "keep that way."

The Northern Echo:

According to the Food Standards Agency, an inspection carried out on August 31, 2021 saw the restaurant given an uprated "good" score of four out of five.

Abdul Ali of the restaurant said it had worked hard to bring the venue back up to standard and made an apology for the previous score.

He: "(We'd) just like to apologise to all our customers for the one star rating. We have worked hard to get everything back to normal.

"We are at four star and hope to keep it that way in the future. We like to thank everyone for the support the have given us."

At the time of its previous inspection, Darlington Borough Council had considered taking legal action, but this was stopped as a caution was offered and accepted instead.

Mr Ali, who is now the current manager of the restaurant, previously told The Echo that it had dismissed two of its staff members following the inspection as part of its overhaul to make drastic improvements.

At the time, he said: "We (would) like to apologise for the one-star rating we have.

"I can assure you we have carried out all the necessary work given to us by the health officer.

"We have worked with them since the last visit and hopefully have them out to rate us again.

"We had the health officer in the restaurant and she has seen the work we have done."
