FIREFIGHTERS were called out to tackle a blaze ion open land in County Durham this morning.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service received a report of a fire at Station Town, near Trimdon, just before 7.30am.

A crew from Peterlee Fire Station attended the scene and discovered a pile of rubbish alight.

They were able to extinguish the fire within half and hour.

A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Reports of a fire in the open in Station Town came into CDDFRS control at 7.24am on Tuesday, 12 October.

"One appliance from Peterlee attended, on arrival crews found a pile of rubbish alight. "Crews extinguished the fire and left the scene at 7.55am."
