A SECOND man charged with the murder of a Teesside dad has appeared in court. 

Joey Matthews, of Newcomen Green, Middlesbrough, appeared at Teesside Magistrates Court on Saturday.

The 20-year-old was also charged with attempting to cause grievous bodily harm. He is due to appear at Teesside Crown Court on Tuesday, October 12. 

Carl Eland died five days after he was knocked off his bike in August as he cycled through Middlesbrough.

A 24-year-old woman was also hit by a white Vauxhall Insignia as they cycled along Homerton Road/Gribdale Road on Saturday, August 21. She suffered minor injuries.

Another man, Brandon Ali appeared in court on Tuesday, accused of murder and wounding with intent in relation to an incident in the Homerton Road and Gribdale Road area of Middlesbrough, on Saturday, August 21.

The 20-year-old was the passenger in the car that allegedly hit Carl Eland and another woman, Teesside Crown Court heard.

Ali, of Dalwood Court, Hemlington, Middlesbrough, made a brief appearance at the court via videolink before being remanded in custody.

The defendant was not asked to enter a plea during the hearing.

A trial date has been provisionally set for February 28 next year. Ali will appear at court next month for a plea and trial preparation hearing.
