POLICE issued 13 antisocial behaviour warnings in a town centre over the period of two days.

Officers responding to calls regarding antisocial behaviour and crime around the Middlesbrough town centre area issued 13 antisocial behaviour warnings and reported a youth for summons for public order over a period of two days.

On Thursday (September 30), neighbourhood PCSOs responded to reports that youths on pedal cycles had been throwing objects and being verbally abusive to members of the public on Linthorpe Road.

One of the PCSOs who attended was spat on by a youth and fireworks were thrown towards them, before fireworks were then thrown into McDonalds restaurant.

Fortunately, no one was physically injured.

On Friday (October 1), police carried out an operation aimed at tackling the group of youths and three were taken home and spoken to in front of their parents.

One male, aged 14, was reported for summons for public order after allegedly becoming verbally abusive.

Middlesbrough Council and housing associations will now also visit these youths at their homes and will look to take further action.

Sergeant Owen Collingwood, from Middlesbrough neighbourhood team, said: “We won’t tolerate any behaviour from anyone who thinks it’s acceptable to intimidate and abuse members of the public going about their business in the town centre.

“It goes without saying that throwing fireworks at people is extremely dangerous and those involved in these incidents will be identified and the appropriate action will be taken. Those who have already been spoken to could face further action from the council and local housing associations.

“Any kind of behaviour such as this has no place in our society and those who think it’s acceptable can be assured that their actions will have consequences.”

Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston said: “This is the type of behaviour the council and police are working night and day to stamp out because it’s absolutely awful and if we don’t intervene it could lead to even worse criminality.

“I’d like to thank the neighbourhood officers from Cleveland Police who have carried out this work and I hope it gives those who repeatedly misbehave the message that it won’t be tolerated.”

Officers are also appealing to trace a man who may have been assaulted by a group of youths in the area of Captain Cook Square around 6pm on Wednesday, September 29.

And the owner of a scooter which may have been damaged when it was kicked over outside Turtle Bay on Corporation Road at around 6pm on Monday, September 27, again by a group of youths.
