In recent days the number of new cases across the region have appeared to be on the decline - with fewer areas seeing case rates above 700 per 100,000 people.

The figures, which cover the seven days to September 30, compared with the week before, show how hundreds of cases have been reported in the areas between them.

How the infection rate is worked out

The infection rate is worked out by looking at the number of cases and the population in each neighbour area, which contain an average of 7,000 people.

Public Health England then look at this to identify the potential hotspots, seeing where exactly high percentages of the population have tested positive.

In the North East, there are 16 towns and villages where the rates are among the region's highest and are currently all tracking above 600 per 100,000 people.
