Investigating officer, Inspector Darren Breslin, said: “Nicholas McDonaugh was a well-respected father and husband who was tragically killed by a driver who paid little attention to the condition of his vehicle, which should not have been on the road that day due to the severity of the condition that it was in.

“John Moorhouse had complete disregard for the safety of other road users and this significantly contributed to the death of Nicholas. The impact upon Nicholas’ family has been catastrophic.

“Myself and the investigation team are fully supportive of the sentence handed out by the Judge to John Moorhouse on Friday and we hope that this highlights the responsibility that drivers have to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy before undertaking any journey. Taking the time to check vehicles can save lives.”
