TWO people have been arrested after an armed robbery at a Sainsbury's Local shop in Thornaby.

It happened at the store on Westbury Street Thornaby at around 10.45pm on Friday night.

A 39-year-old man and 16-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of robbery and are in police custody.

Detectives were called to the shop after reports that a group of people had threatened staff with a weapon and taken a quantity of cash, before fleeing along Charles Street.

Staff from the shop were unharmed during the incident, but were left shaken.

Detectives are appealing for information, private CCTV and dashcam footage from the incident. Anyone with information is asked to call Cleveland Police on 101 quoting 21166910, or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
