SCHOOL students and staff raised more than £400 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The World's Biggest Coffee Morning event is just one of many charity initiatives King James I Academy, in Bishop Auckland, supports each year.

Sweet and savoury items were donated by staff, students and parents for the event, which was held in the Sixth Form Common Room for older students and in the Learning Support Unit for students in years 7 to 11.

Linda Dixon, Sixth Form Mentor, said: "Fundraising is an important part of our Academy timetable and something that all of our students and staff like to get involved in.

"The Macmillan Coffee Morning is a much-anticipated annual event at King James; cancer has touched many of our lives so everyone is keen to get involved and show their support.

"I'm delighted to say that the total raised this year was our best yet, which reflects the strength of feeling for this worthy cause.

"We are already planning our next fundraising activities and hope to make further donations to local charities as Christmas approaches."
