A County Durham breast cancer charity is determined to survive the pandemic and is now organising its first in-person fundraising event since Covid began.

Hug in a Bag provides comforting gifts to those suffering with breast cancer and who are being treated at Darlington Memorial Hospital or North Durham University Hospital.

Like many charities, it's struggling to continue to provide a service to those who need it due to difficulties engaging with the community during the pandemic.

Before Covid, fundraising events included afternoon teas, head shaves and craft fairs.

The organisation has hosted some online events but Emma Wright, Fundraising Manager said: “It’s been much harder to engage with the community and raise awareness during Covid.

"We want to keep going."

Each "hug in a bag" contains £60 worth of gifts including a teddy bear, notebook, candle and information leaflets about breast cancer.

A Christmas market is planned at The Kepier Hall on Church Street in Houghton-Le-Spring on November 27th.

"The pandemic has been the end for so many charities.

"It would be so sad if that happened to us too.

"I really hope we can survive this," Emma said.
