A DANGEROUS driver who fled from police at speeds of 90mph has been jailed.

Roy Morrison was spotted travelling at speed on the A1 in a white Iveco van in the early hours of December 3, despite being banned from the roads.

The 27-year-old had lost his licence after being convicted of causing serious injury by driving following an incident in Durham in 2014.

Despite this, Morrison maintained high speeds of up to 90mph as he travelled south on the A167, refusing to slow when officers from Northumbria Police’s motor patrols team signalled for him to stop.

He was also clocked doing 70mph on a single carriageway road with a 30mph limit before running a red light on Durham Road as he continued to make his way south, heading towards Chester-le-Street.

Continuing his attempt to get away from officers, Morrison has then slowed down, opened the door of his vehicle and jumped out before fleeing.

A foot-chase then ensued before he was arrested a short time later and taken into custody.

He was later charged and appeared before Newcastle Crown Court where he admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.

On Tuesday, Morrison of Drum Lane, Birtley was jailed for ten months at the same court.

Speaking after the hearing, Chief Inspector Ian Cutty from the force’s motor patrol’s department said: “Our roads are not a racetrack and flouting the law can have serious, if not fatal consequences.

“We are thankful that Morrison’s reckless and utterly irresponsible actions did not cause any harm to other motorists, and that our expert motor patrols officers were able to quickly bring this pursuit to a safe conclusion.

“We will not tolerate this type of offending on our roads and will always take robust action.

“I am pleased Morrison has been put before the courts and thanks to a strong case presented, admitted his guilt.”
