A DOG walker - thought to be in her 60s - managed to stop a would-be burglar in his tracks after she spotted him trying to break into a woman's house.

At around 4.30pm on Saturday, September 11 it was reported to Northumbria Police that a male had entered the porch of a woman’s home on Durham Road, Gateshead.

He was spotted by a Good Samaritan, who alerted the victim and challenged the man who then walked away towards the shops in the direction of Low Fell.

Officers investigating the attempter burglary are now trying to trace the woman who saw the male in the house.

She is described as in her 60’s, medium height, and of average build with grey hair.

She was walking two dogs at the time, one black Spaniel and the other a grey Lurcher.

Officers ask that the woman or anyone else who may have any information that could assist with the investigation or has CCTV footage of the nearby area come forward.

Anyone with information that may assist is asked to contact officers through the Northumbria Police website, or by calling 101, and quoting crime ref 100230A/21.
