A TEESSIDE school was broken into just hours before it was due to reopen after the summer holidays.

Outwood Academy Normanby was due to reopen this morning (Monday) after the summer holidays, but had to remain closed after it was burgled.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: “We were called to reports of a burglary at around 12.30am this morning, in which damage was caused to glass at the rear of the building.

"Officers are investigating; however it is not yet known what has been stolen from the school.

"Anyone who may have seen someone acting suspiciously in and around the school during the early hours of this morning is asked to contact Cleveland Police on the non-emergency number 101.”

The school has confirmed it will reopen tomorrow (Tuesday) for all students - at 8.20am - the usual opening time.

In a Facebook video posted to the Outwood Academy Normanby site today, Mr Wappat, the Principal, explained the reasons for the closure.

He said: "Good afternoon to our students, parents and local community. I just wanted to record a quick message to thank you all for your patience and understanding this morning - particularly with us getting in touch about having to close the school today - the first day of term.

"Unfortunately, overnight there was a break in into the school building, which resulted in a small amount of damage but meant that the building was not secure and we've had to liaise with the police to crime officers and obviously ensuring the clean up ready for opening tomorrow.

"So, sorry about what happened. We will be open tomorrow at the normal time, so all students expected back on site at 8.20 in the morning. And I would just like to thank the police and colleagues in the building for all their help today to make sure the school was ready for the fantastic start to a new term.

"Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow, all the very best."

The school is based on Normanby Road and opened on September 1, 2019 when Hillsview Academy joined the Outwood Grange family of schools.

Before posting the video the school posted on Facebook that 'due to unforeseen circumstances Outwood Academy Normanby is CLOSED to all students and all staff today. Please DO NOT go onto the school site.'
