A CRASH caused huge tailbacks on the A1 southbound in North Yorkshire this afternoon with up to six miles of queuing traffic.

Highways England received reports of an accident on the southbound carriageway between junction 48 at Boroughbridge and junction 47 for Harrogate at around 2pm today.

The incident caused six-miles of tailbacks along the southbound carriageway but Highways England says that all lanes are now clear.

Emergency services attended the scene and a North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "Shortly before 2pm today North Yorkshire Police received reports of a single vehicle collision on the A1 southbound just north of junction 47 near Allerton Park.

"A black Ford Focus had collided with the central reservation.

"The female driver is not believed to have suffered any injuries in the collision but was taken to hospital for a check up.
