ARMED officers arrested a man armed with a samurai sword in Darlington on Tuesday. 

Officers from Durham Constabulary were called to a disturbance in China Street, Darlington, at around 3.45pm. 

A number of officers, including armed officers, attended the scene and a brief containment operation took place at a residential property.

The force said a man in his mid-30s was arrested on suspicion of affray, possession of an offensive weapon, and possession of a firearm. He remains in custody and enquiries are continuing.

A spokesman added: "An ornamental sword and gas-powered handgun were recovered at the scene.

"No-one was injured during the incident."

Residents had reported traffic on North Road in the town while officers are believed to have blocked off the Harrowgate Hill roundabout. 

All temporary road closures have now been lifted and traffic is back to normal.
