REDCAR Racecourse takes the latest important step in its successful phased return of spectators this week.

Redcar is staging a meeting this Thursday (August 5) and the popular Course Enclosure – in the centre of the track – will be opening for the first time since lockdown.

The meeting was originally due to take place on Sunday but has been brought forward as part of a rearrangement of fixtures by the British Horseracing Authority.

Crowds returned to Redcar on May 17 for the first time since October 2019, and capacity has been gradually increased for meetings in June and July in line with Government guidelines.

However, up until now, only The Grandstand Enclosure has been open, with The Course Enclosure remaining closed so that Covid-19 protocols could be followed.

Thursday’s meeting marks the reopening of The Course Enclosure, which is traditionally popular with families.

Redcar’s general manager, Amy Fair, said: “Thursday is a really important milestone in our phased return, which has proved very successful so far. Our strategy has been to take one careful step at a time to ensure that everyone stays safe, and we can’t wait to see families having the option to enjoy The Course Enclosure again.”

Both The Grandstand and Course enclosures will be accessible for those paying in advance and on the day. Admission is £15 for The Grandstand Enclosure and £5 for The Course Enclosure. There are discounts to £12 and £4 for those booking in advance through the racecourse website. Children under 18 are free, but there are no other concessions.

Access to The Course Enclosure will be as usual but The Grandstand Enclosure can only be reached via the main entrance on Redcar Lane. Entrances off Lumley Road and West Dyke Road will not be open.

The playground in The Course Enclosure remains out of use for the foreseeable future due to the ongoing pandemic.

Thursday’s meeting is an outdoor event, with no indoor seating, other than for those who have booked hospitality. Spectators are, therefore, advised to bring their own camping chairs and picnic blankets.
