A PHARMACY worker has braved the shave in honour of her best friend who is battling cancer.

Clare Lambert, who lives in Brotton, east Cleveland, waved goodbye to her long locks yesterday at James & Co hairdressers, in Marske, in aid of Breast Cancer UK and Breast Cancer Now.

Mrs Lambert, 56, took on the brave feat in support of her lifelong friend Fiona Thompson.

The 54-year-old was diagnosed with breast cancer late last year and has been undergoing treatment ever since.

Wanting to help in someway Mrs Lambert decided she would cut off 14 inches of hair if she could raise £1,000 for charity.

The Northern Echo:

In a statement on JustGiving Mrs Lambert said: "As most of you who know me for most of my life Fiona has been my best friend. We have always been very close and now she is going through the worst time. Some of you may already know Fiona has breast cancer and is undergoing treatment. I can't stand by and do nothing. I need to help in some way. So, on July 31st if I raise £1000 I will shave my head.

"It has to be something big to bring in the pennies and I thought it would give me some insight into what it's like for all those poor girls loosing their hair to chemo. It's a big thing. So please please give whatever you can - even if it's a pound. If everyone who reads this can donate a pound we should do it."

Already, £1,888 has been raised by 110 supporters online and a further £600 in person  - with time still to donate.

Mrs Lambert said: "I can't get over how much support I've had from everybody and the girls at work have been fantastic and so encouraging."

The hair has been donated to the Little Princess Trust, a charity that makes wigs for young people who lose their hair through cancer treatment and other illnesses.
