A DEDICATED officer who tutored new cops throughout the pandemic has been formally thanked by the Prime Minister.

PC Jess Geoghegan, who works with A Relief in Consett, was invited to the Downing Street reception to recognise public workers.

The 29-year-old joined the force as a PCSO in 2013 and loved it so much she decided to apply to become a police constable.

During the pandemic, she tutored and supported new officers as they joined the force and also led on team awareness sessions on a range of subjects including how to look after your mental health.

She said: “It’s not every day you get an invitation off the Prime Minister to attend 10 Downing Street so he can thank you for all your hard work throughout the pandemic.

“I feel so fortunate to be selected to represent Durham Constabulary – it was a real honour.”

PC Geoghegan, who took her mum Julie as her plus one, added: “I have always wanted to be a police officer – it’s always been my dream career and my family have been so supportive of me.

“It was really difficult throughout the pandemic so we really had to think outside the box with some things given the restrictions.”

Now an acting sergeant, PC Geoghegan said she would encourage anyone to look at the career path.

She said: “I’m absolutely loving it on Response and I’ll be looking to do my sergeants exams next year.

“I would encourage anyone to apply to join Durham – it’s a fantastic force and if you’ve even got an inkling of applying, just go for it.”

PC recruitment with Durham has been extended until August 6.
