POLICE have confirmed the identity of the body found at Steeley Pier last week.
Police can now confirm that a body found near Steetley Pier in Hartlepool on Thursday, July 22, is that of 14-year-old Matthew Sherrington.
The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the Coroner.
A police spokesperson said: "Our thoughts remain with Matthew’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time."
Matthew Sherrington went missing on Thursday, July 15 after last being seen playing by the beach with some friends.
Thousands of pounds have been raised for his funeral online.
Last week the family held a balloon tribute at Steeley Pier.
Flowers and tributes were laid at the scene and midget gems were thrown into the sea.
