A MAN who breached a domestic violence protection order (DVPO) was handed a two-week custodial sentence at court.
The 52-year-old was alleged to have assaulted a woman in East Cleveland on the night of July 21.
Officers immediately discovered the man was subject to a DVPO which had only been issued on July 6.
He was therefore arrested on suspicion of assault and on suspicion of breach of DVPO, and charged to Northumbria Magistrates’ Court, where he was found guilty of both offences yesterday (July 27).
The man will now go to prison for 14 days while his victim continues to receive support from Cleveland Police.
PC Neil Lamb, Cleveland Police’s dedicated Domestic Violence Protection Order officer, said: “This was a good outcome as courts can choose to fine people - or to jail them.
“This man being in prison allows space and time for the person experiencing abuse to receive further support if they want to, whether from police or our local specialist domestic abuse organisations.
“Tackling domestic abuse is a priority for the force and we are using DVPOs more and more as they can be brought into place quickly, meaning victims can be safeguarded and protected immediately.
“And as this case shows we can - and do - take swift action if breaches happen.”
Speaking directly to anyone experiencing domestic abuse, PC Lamb, added: “If you are ready to report, we are here for you.
“Our specially trained officers will listen to you, they will believe you - and they will support and safeguard you.”
In order to protect the victim, further details about the offender and the offence are not being released.
