PLANS to build a scrapyard near a residential street has caused uproar with local residents.

Omega Metal Recycling Ltd has submitted a planning application to Middlesbrough Council to convert a storage facility into a scrapyard.

The site is located on land off James Street, North Ormesby, Middlesbrough. James Street and Brewsdale Road are two busy commercial roads with a wide variety of businesses with access to the A66.

The application site is approximately 0.42hectares on an existing concrete slab from previous industrial use, which will be used for location of containers, storage of recycled areas and parking.

The transfer facility activity comprises the importation, storage, and exportation of locally sourced waste metal.

The site is for the collection, storage and distribution for clean metals Monday-Friday 08:00am to 04:30pm and 08:00am to 13:00pm on Saturdays.

However, the plans have gained a lot of opposition from residents of the area who are raising a lot of concerns including noise and environmental issues.

Resident Stephen Ripley said: “Many residents of the new build area near the proposed site are very upset and concerned with noise, smell, and an unsightly scrapyard in their back yard."

“Also the scrap yard is in use now before the so-called planning permission has even been looked at or accepted.”

Fellow resident Miss Claire Dacres said: “This would be way too close to a residential housing estate and very close to adapter properties for disabled families. "It is also very close to a school and the noise would be disruptive to the school where children are learning. This could be potentially dangerous and is not an ideal location for a scrap yard.”

Another resident Sean Grimes said: "This will have a negative effect on our houses and environment.

"I woke up to a lot of banging, I feel like we are not being listened to."

Middlesbrough Councillor for North Ormesby, Ashley Waters said: “I have been acting objectively on this.

“I don’t sit on the planning committee, but I will be able to talk about it on behalf of the residents if it does go to committee.

“I have looked at every avenue, but they are well within their rights to apply for planning application there.

“The site is already designated for light industrial use.

“I have asked the residents of the area to let people know what they think, I want decisions to be made with the proper facts.”

A spokesperson from Omega Metal Recycling said: “We are working with the council as part of the planning process which is currently ongoing, and we shall respond to any and all relevant concerns in due course.”
