A BODY has been found in the search for Matthew Sherrington who went missing last Thursday.

Emergency services were called to a 999 incident this morning in Hartlepool.

Around five police and ambulance, vehicles were at the scene Brus tunnel in the town at 9am.

A coastguard vehicle is also at the scene.

The police closed the tunnel and beach near to Steetley Pier.

A spokesperson from Cleveland Police said: "Officers searching for missing Matthew Sherrington aged 14 from Hartlepool have this morning found the body of a young male near to Steetley Pier in Hartlepool.

"Whilst no formal identification has taken place as yet, officers are in contact with Matthew’s family and have informed them that a body has been located."

The 14-year-old went missing last Thursday.

The RNLI launched a number of operations throughout the week to find him.
