A PROGRAMME of activities for children to take part in during the summer holidays has been launched in Darlington.

The free activities are being put on by Darlington Borough Council and are aimed at youngsters aged between eight and 12.

There are sessions in locations across the town, as well as in Middleton St George, Heighington and Hurworth.

Councillor Jon Clarke, the council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: "We've got a fantastic range of events planned.

"We've never done this much before as a council and I'm proud of what we've achieved."

The council's public health team is working with Outdoor Ambition Limited to deliver the sessions, which are on every weekday between 10-noon and 1pm-3pm. Sessions also take places in the villages on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 4pm and 6pm.

All activities are free and will run at the same time each week for the duration of the school holidays, ending on Friday, August 27.

Places do not need to be booked and children are encouraged to wear suitable clothing and footwear, suncream and bring water.

Cllr Clarke added: “We are delighted to work with Outdoor Ambition Limited to offer every child aged eight–12 years, living in the Darlington such a fantastic opportunity. We hope the activities will encourage children to enjoy the outdoors, meet new friends, discover new talents, and loves of sport.”

“If you have loved the Euros, Wimbledon, the Olympics, or other sporting events are inspiring you to try something new, visit the council’s Move More webpage

www.darlington.gov.uk/movemorejourney to find details of fun activities.

"Moving more improves our physical and mental wellbeing and there’s no better time to start than now.”

More than 700 children eligible for free school meals have also signed up to a programme, with activities planned including falconry and arts and crafts.

The council is also putting on a roller rink for the first two weeks of the school holidays, located in Market Square. It is free and recommended that people book in advance.

After that, there will be a different attraction each Wednesday, including skateboard displays, mini golf, a climbing wall and Go Karts.
