IT was the result we all feared and never wanted to see. An England defeat at the hands of Italy in the final of the UEFA European Championship.

Perhaps, what hurts the most is Southgate's England team giving us hope and allowing us all to believe that it actually was, indeed, coming home.

However, it was this hope that united a nation and gave us weeks of joy after a horrendous last 18 months. And for that, we thank them.

North East readers have echoed this sentiment in their messages of support for the team.

Chris Wright said: "Hold your heads high you made an amazing effort and your country is so proud of you. Well done."

James Durham Roberts said: "It came home long before the final. Hold your heads high and be as proud of your achievements as your country is of you.

"As individuals and collectively as a team, especially in these challenging times you picked the whole country up and we march on with you.

Maria S Cooper added: "They did absolutely brilliant to get second place. Yes, it would have been lovely to win but England played fair, unlike Italy who spent most of their time yanking England players off their feet. England are the true winners."

Haggerston Leigh wanted to remind the team of how far they came. She said: "Lads, I know last night hurt deeply but think of all the big names who have played for England over the years.

"Now, remember you have done something that none of them were able to do. You reached the final of a major tournament. No English team has done that for 55 years. Hold your heads high."
