A MAIN road into a major industrial park is to be closed down again for two days to be resurfaced because the original work was not up to scratch.

Highway bosses at North Yorkshire county council say they’re 'disappointed' that the road which leads into the business park at Dalton Lane in Thirsk has to be redone by contractors who only carried out the work last year.

It follows closure of the main road in October 2020 for a week to relieve further flooding on the main bridge onto the site. The work on this was to update a large scale £4m scheme to provide a new bridge at the site where businesses struggled for years with ongoing flooding problems.

As part of the latest work businesses and residents are being warned that there will be major disruption. The road will be closed totally from 6pm on Friday July 16 to 6am on Monday July 19. Advance warning signs will be in place as well as a signed diversion route.

County Councillor Robert Baker, member for the local Sowerby division, said: "Due to issues with material supplies, the current surfacing does not meet our specification and will be re-laid at the cost of our contractor's supplier.

"Unfortunately the issue was out of our hands and these circumstances are very disappointing. However, we have a responsibility to ensure our roads are safe for all road users and are in the best condition they can be.

"We appreciate the closure will be particularly inconvenient for those living locally so we apologise in advance for the disruption. We ask for your cooperation while we carry out this essential work."

Businesses have been told and letters have been sent to householders who will be affected. Signs are also going up at the site with diversions.

Vehicle access to all the properties will be restricted but the council says contractors will help where they possibly can during the working day. But they warn there will be no pedestrian access.

The work carried out last October was to relieve major flooding on the site which had been caused by back to back storms earlier in the year. It had shown there were shortfalls in the original scheme to build the new bridge at Dalton Lane.

This meant that an area of the road had to be raised above the existing level which involved infilling between the flood embankment close to the A168 and overall reconstruction of the road which now needs resurfacing.
