POLICE have taken to social media following rumours of attempted child abductions in County Durham.

Officers in Consett reminded people not to accept social media speculation as being true until facts were verified.

The rumours have been circulating in the Castleside and Delves Lane areas.

They confirmed one incident had been reported to have taken place in the Castleside area on June 28.

The incident was reported to police and is currently under investigation.

No other incidents have been reported to police.

Officers are now speaking to residents to investigate the validity of other rumours but urged people not to accept "speculation" on social media.

A spokesperson for Consett Police said: “There have been no other reports to police of any incidents like this in the Castleside or Delves Lane areas since.

"As always, it is important to remain diligent to ensure that our children and loved ones remain safe and genuine incidents should be reported to police and will be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly.

“We are currently speaking with local residents to confirm the validity of the further rumoured incidents, but we would urge residents not to accept social media speculation as being true until the facts can be verified.

“If anyone has further information in relation to the ongoing investigation please do not hesitate to contact West CID on 101.”
