TEESSIDE Airport has confirmed that a deal has been struck between Loganair and British Airways to operate flights between the region and more than 100 destinations.

The deal, which will see 'codeshare' flights operated by Loganair, will link British Airways passengers via Heathrow Airport to 134 destinations across the world.

It means passengers will be able to book a single ticket between Teesside and any British Airways destination, with luggage automatically transferred between flights.

The Northern Echo understands that the codeshare flights will go on sale on the British Airways website from June 22 for travel beginning on July 1.

Kay Ryan, Chief Commercial Officer at Loganair, said its flights between Teesside and London Heathrow will ramp up to three times a day from July 12.

She said: "I’m delighted that our customers, wishing to connect through London Heathrow to the rest of the world, can now do so by booking via British Airways on one ticket, with all the security and peace of mind that brings to international travel."

British Airways, which operates out of Heathrow's Terminal 5, has said it is "delighted" with the announcement.

Chris Fordyce, Head of Alliances at the airline, said: “I am delighted to be growing our partnership with Loganair through this new codeshare route, and look forward to connecting customers in the Tees Valley with our extensive global network.”

The Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen described the agreement as a "coup" as he said it would reinforce the airport as a "great asset" to the region.

He said: "This arrangement with British Airways cuts down on queuing times, stress and hassle for people travelling abroad for business or a much-deserved holiday.

“The global aviation industry has obviously been hit hard by coronavirus, but it’s essential that we put measures in place now so that we’re in a position for a speedy and smooth take-off as restrictions ease."

The agreement comes after the terminal building was unveiled to the public earlier this month after a multi-million pound refurbishment.

Mr Houchen said: “Together, it all means we’re ready to wow not only tourists, but also investors and businesspeople, who will see the airport as a great asset if they’re looking to relocate here.

"Teesside International’s a key part of my plan for jobs and we’re continuing to grab all of the opportunities it presents with both hands.”
