TWELVE people have been arrested after reports of a window being shot at.

Police were called to a disturbance on Colston Street in the Benwell area of the Newcastle at about 10.35pm on Thursday

A member of the public reported hearing two loud bangs in the street before seeing a group of males leaving the scene in a vehicle.

Damage to a window was consistent with gunshots but nobody inside the address was injured.

Arrests were made in Newcastle, as well as in Cambridgeshire, Essex and West Yorkshire on suspicion of either firearms-related offences or assisting an offender.

Ten remain in police custody while two have been released under investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Ed Small, of Northumbria Police, said that all those involved in the incident are believed to be known to each other.

He said: “We treat any incident where a firearm has been discharged extremely seriously and have been carrying out extensive enquiries into this particular incident.

“Thankfully nobody has been injured but it is completely unacceptable for anyone to discharge a weapon in a public place.

“We have identified those we believe to be involved and are confident that the offenders and the victim are known to one another.

“This is an isolated incident and there is no wider threat to the community but we hope that the arrest of these 12 individuals can offer some reassurance.

“We will continue to have a highly visible presence in the community and would ask anyone with information about this incident to contact us immediately.

“We also want to thank our colleagues at West Yorkshire Police and Cambridgeshire Constabulary who supported us with warrants and arrest activity across the country.”
