A NORTH-EAST town has been named among the cheapest in the UK for a pint - with the average measure costing just £2.05 a go.

A study looking at how much punters are charged for their pints named the top eight where drinks are at their cheapest.

Money.co.uk, which carried out the research earlier this year, found rather unsurprisingly that the most expensive place for a pint was the capital.

Meanwhile the research found that Telford was the UKs cheapest for pints, closely followed by Hartlepool - which was the second.

A spokesperson for Money.co.uk said: "The distance between Hartlepool and Telford is around 170 miles, but the price of a pint is much closer, with the North-East coastal town missing out on the top spot in the rankings by a mere five pence."

According to research by Money.co.uk, one of Hartlepool’s most popular pubs is ‘The Tall Ships’ named after the event when it took place in the town in 2010.

These are the cheapest places to have a pint

1. Telford - £2.00

2. Hartlepool - £2.05

3. Scarborough - £2.10

4. Blackburn with Darwen - £2.30

5. Salford - £2.30

6. Stirling £2.30

7. Stockport £2.30

8. Stevenage £2.50

Summing up where was the most expensive to have a pint, with no places in the North-East making the list, a spokesperson added: "Unsurprisingly the most expensive place for a pint in the country is the capital, in London it costs on average £5 for a beer, and in many central areas of the city it is far more than this.

"This means that you could buy two and a half pints in Telford for the same price that Londoners will pay for one.

"Outside of the capital city, the most expensive place for a pint is the cathedral city of Canterbury in Kent where the average price of a pint of beer is £4.80. Just behind Canterbury, is Cambridge where the average pint costs £4.65.

"In the other constituent nations the capitals of Scotland and Northern Ireland are the most expensive cities as both Belfast and Edinburgh charge an average of £4.50 per pint."
