A COUPLE who between them have helped generations of schoolchildren cross the road have retired.

Ronnie and Joan Howard and their lollipop sticks have been a familiar site outside Copeland Road Primary School, in West Auckland, for many years.

But on Friday, December 21, they supervised the youngsters for the final time - although they will still keep a watchful eye as they live only yards from the school.

Mrs Howard, 79, has been the school lollipop lady for 39 years, and said she was sad to leave. "I am a bit sorry," she said.

"I have done it for so many years, so it will be strange.

"I haven't really given much thought to what I will do now, but it won't be too different because we only live over the road."

Mr Howard, 81, joined his wife at the roadside nine years ago, having previously been the school's caretaker.

He said: "I like my gardening and I like my car.

Now we'll be able to go for a drive and we won't have to keep watching the clock.

"We have always had to get back in time for school finishing."

Youngsters and teachers held an assembly for the couple, who were also invited to open West Auckland's summer fair this year.

"The school has always been very good to me and my wife," said Mr Howard.

"It has been a pleasure.

There were a few damp eyes in the assembly, from ourselves and some of the teachers."
