A STATE-OF-THE-ART library will be built in the region following a £1.5m lottery cash injection.

North Yorkshire County Council will add a further £1.6m to the fund to create a brand-new library facility for Harrogate.

The funding will allow work to begin on an internal refurbishment of the existing building in October 2008. This will create more space for library services and will include comfortable meeting rooms, a cyber-caf and a council office.

County councillor Chris Metcalfe, executive member for adult and community services said: "This is terrific news for Harrogate. We have been looking at opportunities to improve library services in Harrogate for some time.

"As well as a superb new library facility, this aims to be a groundbreaking project based on services delivered out of central Harrogate.

"It will be achieved by working closely with the local voluntary and community sectors to develop services such as health promotion, adult learning and volunteering opportunities for which we know there is a high demand."

Work on the library is likely to take about two years.
