LATE night revellers are urged to come forward with information for police investigating a taxi rank assault.

A teenager suffered what were initially feared to be serious head injuries following the incident in Durham Market Place, shortly after midnight on Sunday.

The 19-year-old victim, from Langley Park, near Durham, was taken to the city's University Hospital of North Durham and treated in the intensive therapy unit.

But today he was moved from the unit onto a day ward and police said his injuries were not as bad as first feared.

Two arrests were initially made by detectives investigating the incident.

A 16-year-old youth from Durham and a 26-year-old man from Darlington were released after questioning, pending further inquiries, and have been bailed to return to Durham Police Station on a date in mid-February.

Further arrests are expected as inquiries continue, however.

An appeal has been made to anyone around the Market Place, at around 12.30pm, on Sunday to come forward with information.

Acting Detective Inspector Paul Colling, of Durham CID, said: "This incident happened in the taxi rank opposite Boots in the Market Place and would have witnessed by a number of people.

"Further arrests are likely and I would urge anyone who was there at the time and saw what happened to contact use and help the police investigation."

Anyone with information can ring Durham CID, on 0845-60 60 365, or Crimestoppers' freephone line, anonymously should they wish, on 0800-555111.
