A COMMUNITY group has received funds from the publisher of The Northern Echo.

The Gannett Foundation, the charitable wing of the paper's owner, Newsquest, gives hundreds of thousands of pounds each year to projects in the circulation areas of its 317 titles.

Priority is given to community organisations needing money for equipment or the running costs.

Recipients include groups that help homeless people, people with disabilities, or run after-school activities for disadvantaged children, and youth organisations and community safety initiatives.

Gold Collective Club (Age Concern), in Newton Aycliffe, received £500 to run trips for its elderly patrons.

The group has 24 members, aged between 66 and 84, who meet two or three times a month at the town's RAFA club.

Treasurer and founder member Delia Stout said: "The money will help to get the ladies out of their houses and give them some quality of life."
