A DRIVER who sustained critical injuries after his vehicle collided with a metal sign has died.

An investigation was launched on March 25 after the one-vehicle crash critically injured the 64-year-old male driver.

Officers were alerted to the incident shortly before 3.50pm, when it was reported a grey Citroen Picasso travelling northbound on the A68 towards the Riding Mill roundabout junction with the A695, had come off the road and collided with a large metal sign.

The driver had been taken to hospital for treatment but on Sunday died as a result of his injuries. His family is currently being supported by specialist officers.

Enquiries remain ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision and police have issued a further appeal for information.

Sergeant Matt Sykes from the Force's Motor Patrols department said: "Sadly this incident has resulted in a man losing his life, and our thoughts are with his loved ones at this difficult time.
"Our investigation is ongoing and we have already spoken to a number of witnesses but we would still like to hear from anyone else who might have been driving in the area at the time, especially those with dashcam footage, so we can build up a clear picture of the moments leading up to the collision."
