THREE teenagers are currently being questioned by detectives investigating a suspected arson attack that destroyed the home of a former marine.

The young men, aged 17, 18 and 19, were arrested on Sunday and have been in police custody in connection with a major house fire in Wingate, near Peterlee.

The blaze destroyed the home of Sean Ivey, 38, who lived at Taylor Grove, with his wife, Kate, and their two young children.

It also destroyed the couple’s car and caravan and has left the couple homeless.

Two men, aged 22 and 25, arrested last week on suspicion of arson have been released on police bail, although one has subsequently been charged with an unrelated offence of handling stolen goods.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Thursday morning and there was a second fire at the property on Friday morning.

Neighbourhood Inspector Emma Kay, of Durham Constabulary, said: “We had additional patrols out in the village over the weekend and that extra police presence will continue.

“We would urge anyone who has information to come forward and speak to us as soon as possible”.
