Today's TV: Panorama investigates how other governments handled Covid in comparison to the UK

BORIS JOHNSON’S government has received plenty of criticism from some quarters over its handling of the coronavirus pandemic. A year on from the start of the first lockdown, Jane Corbin investigates whether Britain’s approach really was so disastrous by comparing it to the policies adopted by other countries around the world. She also reveals which nations have been the most successful at keeping their citizens safe, while highlighting how outcomes can be analysed and what lessons have been learned along the way.

Undercover OAP: The Mole Agent – Storyville (BBC Four, 9pm)

Maite Alberdi’s Oscar-tipped film, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020, was described as the “most unusual documentary” of last year. It follows lovable 83-year-old Sergio Chamy who is hired by a private eye, Rómulo Aitken, and equipped with ‘spy’ glasses and a special Austin Powers-style pen as he snoops around a Chilean nursing home, making sure that the residents there are being treated properly. As Sergio keeps copious notes and shares his observations, the playful documentary about a spy in a nursing home gradually becomes a sombre look at ageing and desperately hanging on to human connection.

Unforgotten ITV

Unforgotten (ITV, 9pm)

Few of us tuning in envy Dr Leanne Balcombe her job – she’s the one tasked with literally piecing together Matthew Walsh’s body in a bid to find out how he died. Thankfully, after a lot of hard work and perseverance, she finally thinks she may have found the answer, which should make Cassie and Sunny’s job easier. Once again they’re interviewing the main suspects and think they’re on the verge of a breakthrough. However, as is so often the case, something happens that derails the investigation – and this time it’s a tragedy involving one of the detectives. Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar are once again at the top of their game in writer Chris Lang’s wonderfully enthralling crime drama.

Football’s Darkest Secret (BBC1, 9pm)

Bafta-winning director Daniel Gordon, whose previous credits include Hillsborough and The Australian Dream, is behind another landmark documentary. The three-part programme examines the abuse of youth footballers from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s. During that period, several coaches and scouts attached to major clubs used their positions of power to prey on vulnerable boys. We learn how many were too afraid to speak out about their experiences until one man – Andy Woodward – bravely came forward. Since then, more than 800 victims have broken their silence, identifying around 300 suspects in the process. Survivors and their families discuss how their experiences have impacted on their lives, in many cases leaving them living a nightmare after their dreams were shattered.

Hoarder Homes: No Room to Move (C5, 9pm)

During lockdown, many people found they had time on their hands so decided to fill it by sorting out the junk that tends to accumulate in most homes. Old clothes were thrown out or given away, items no longer needed were stored in the shed or garage until charity shops reopened. But there are other folk who can’t stand the thought of getting rid of anything, which can cause problems. We’ll meet some of them in this new series, which begins as deep-cleaning experts Caz and Tee arrive to help Paul clear out his cottage in Bath.

24 Hours in Police Custody C4

24 Hours in Police Custody (C4, 9pm)

A new four-part series begins in dramatic fashion with the arrest of a 23-year-old man who has a long history of violence. He’s suspected of carrying out a string of offences that have left victims not only wounded but mentally shaken. Unfortunately, despite hours of questioning, the police get nowhere and without any fresh evidence, have to release him. Within days another attack takes place and it seems he can finally be brought to justice – only for him to vanish and end up on the Most Wanted list.
