A MAN was told a “substantial” sentence is the most likely outcome after he admitted aggravated burglary and attempted rape.

The comment was made by Recorder David Kelly after defendant Steven Edwards made admissions at Durham Crown Court.

Appearing via video link from nearby Durham Prison, Edwards pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and attempted rape, said to have taken place on Monday January 18, this year.

Edwards, 31, of Sixth Street, Horden, also admitted two counts of burglary at addresses in New Street and Allergate, both in Durham, on January 23.

Among items taken in those break-ins were a laptop computer, a back-pack, mirror, jewellery and a mobile phone.

A charge of fraud was also admitted by Edwards, having used a stolen bank card 22 times between January 20 and 23.

Christine Egerton, for Edwards, said a psychiatric report is being drawn up on behalf of the defence prior to him being sentenced.

Adjourning sentence in the case until May 14, Recorder Kelly remanded Edwards to remain in custody and told him: “You appreciate the seriousness of these matters and that a substantial sentence of imprisonment is the most likely outcome.”

He asked the psychiatrist drawing up the report to assess Edwards’ level of “dangerousness”.
