Money saving guru Martin Lewis has reportedly arrived in Darlington ahead of a showdown with Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

The personal finance expert and host of The Martin Lewis Money Show on ITV Tweeted that he was on his way to a secret location in the North-East on Wednesday night, just hours after it was revealed in the budget that Darlington is going to be home to 750 Treasury jobs.

The Northern Echo:

Although he didn't reveal the location, eagle-eyed viewers recognised the location as Darlington.

It's understood Lewis is set to interview Mr Sunak on Thursday morning with the interview airing as part of The Martin Lewis Money Show on Thursday evening.

Lewis tweeted to his 1m followers: "Just got on the train for the first time in a year.  On my way to North-East Eng (for 'security' reasons can't say exactly where) to stay in a hotel, before interviewing @RishiSunak tomorrow morning.

"Strange to be outside my immediate locale for the first time in many weeks."

It comes after Darlington was revealed as the location of the government's new Treasury North campus and Teesside was given Freeport status in the chancellor's budget.
