SOME restaurants in the North-East have received a prestigious Michelin star while many others have noted in the Michelin Guide, an accolade in itself.

Bagging a Michelin star is the ultimate hallmark of culinary excellence, with 22 restaurants given new Michelin star ratings in during a virtual event.

There were just three two-star Michelin awards and two-three stars, but 17 restaurants were awarded one star while 16 were given Bib Gourmand recognition.

With its Bib Gourmand status, Michelin is championing value-for-money restaurants, offering good food at competitive prices.

This year also saw The Michelin Green Star for Sustainability making its debut, with 23 restaurants receiving the award.

The Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland 2021 lists the county's best places to eat, with this year taking into account industry recovery from Covid-19.

Its release was pushed from October 2020 to January to give judges time "to be fair to restaurateurs" in the face of the pandemic.

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guides, said: "This has been a hugely challenging period for the hospitality industry and our thoughts remain with all those who have suffered from the pandemic and by the restrictions that have been put in place.

"We were heartened by the number of chefs who called us during the year to ensure we were still going ahead with the Guide and our yearly awards. The Michelin Guide is about so much more than recognising those at the top of their profession; it is about promoting the hospitality industry as a whole and we want to shine a light on the hard work, tenacity and commitment of chefs and restaurant teams."

The Michelin Guide looks to support the talent, adaptability and commitment shown by chefs and restaurateurs by showcasing the restaurants.
