A DURHAM City café has reportedly shut its doors for good after becoming a popular destination with people far and wide over the years.

Esquires Coffee on Silver Street has been cleared of its equipment, leaving just a few pieces of furniture behind as the unit has gone on the market.

The firm, which has temporarily closed its cafés across the UK for the third lockdown, closed the Durham café following restrictions introduced in November.

At the time, it posted on social media: "Sadly we have made the difficult decision to close for the second lockdown.

"Thank you for your continued support and we hope to see you all in December! From everyone at Esquires Durham X."

But after remaining closed, the agent handling the unit on behalf of its landlord has confirmed it is available for lease.

Joseph I’Anson, senior surveyor at Bradley Hall Chartered Surveyors and Estate Agents said: “This outstanding city centre retail unit offers an extensive glazed return frontage and has a range of neighbouring occupiers.

"The property is situated on Silver Street, arguably the City’s busiest pedestrian street leading from Market Place to Framwelgate Bridge which links both sides of this highly populated city.”

Although Esquires Coffee looks to have shut, earlier this month The Northern Echo revealed that a brand new coffee house had opened on Saddler Street.
