A WEATHER warning for heavy snow has been updated - and it shows it is set to hit the region on more days later this week.

The Met Office has issued a further yellow warning for snow across parts of the North-East and North Yorkshire, in addition to an alert issued yesterday.

Forecasters had originally said the western parts of our region, which mainly affects Weardale and Teesdale in County Durham, and Richmondshire in North Yorkshire, would fall on Tuesday.

But they have now updated their warning to say that in addition, snow could again fall from midnight on Thursday, lasting right through to around 6am on Friday.

It warned that roads and transport may be disrupted, rural communities cut off, and power cuts as a result of severe conditions.

What the Met Office has said

A spokesperson said: "A band of snowfall will likely push northeast into this region during the early hours of Thursday and become slow-moving.

"Snow may fall to lower elevations for a time with some locations seeing several cm by morning, however above 200 m elevation significant and prolonged snowfall is possible throughout Thursday, with the potential for 15-30cm to accumulate which may lead to transport disruption.

"Overnight into Friday snowfall will turn lighter and more patchy, and likely become restricted to elevations above 300-400 M, but may see a further 5-10 cm."
