A MAYOR has vowed defiance after his home was hit by a brick attack in Thornaby.

Windows at Steve Walmsley’s home on Chadderton Drive were smashed in the early hours of this morning (Monday, January 25).

The 70-year-old was watching Cream play from the Royal Albert Hall at about 2am when a brick careered into his lounge.

The Thornaby mayor rushed outside to pursue the suspect to no avail.

“I couldn’t get into the car because it was all frosted up – otherwise I would have chased him,” added Cllr Walmsley.

Fortunately, the mayor, and fellow councillor Sylvia Walmsley, were unhurt by the shattered glass.

The mayor said: “We don’t want this in Thornaby. We need everyone and the courts to work together.”

The mayor has been outspoken in the past about anti-social behaviour, damage and crime on the Victoria estate.

Windows have also been broken elsewhere in Thornaby in recent nights.

Cllr Walmsley said Georgiana Close had been targeted twice – with the home of an 87-year-old man hit by damage.

Cleveland Police conducted enquiries into the string of smashed windows in the town.

A force spokeswoman said: “A 17-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of a number of criminal damage offences.  He is currently in police custody.”
