A CALL has been made for ex-steelworkers to return to their former workplace and help deliver the Mayor's vision for the Teesworks site.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen's rallying cry to get more former steelworkers back on to the former SSI site comes after plans were approved in December for 4.5million sq ft of manufacturing space on the banks of the River Tees.

The development will cater for the offshore wind industry and will create 1,000 construction jobs during the eight-year build programme.

Ambitious plans have also been submitted for more than nine million sq ft of business and industrial space covering the entire Teesworks site.

This is the region’s biggest ever planning application, which will create up to 11,400 jobs when fully operational.

Mayor Houchen said: “In the weeks and months ahead hundreds more jobs will be created, and thousands more once work starts on delivering key projects across the site, and our former steelworkers absolutely should be the cornerstone of the workforce that delivers these exciting plans.”
