POLICE are investigating reports of suspicious man in a white van kerb-crawling alongside young girls and scaring them.

The first incident happened on December 1 in Aiskew on the A684 Bedale Road near to the railway level crossing.

At around 4.30pm, two 11-year-old girls were approached by a man in a white van.

He got out of his van and shouted to the girls who became frightened and ran home.

The second incident occurred about 8.15 am yesterday (Tuesday December 15) at the same location.

On this occasion, the girls were walking to school and the same van and driver drove slowly alongside and in front of the girls.

They reported the incident to school and police.

Police are conducting patrols in the area to reassure the community and help identify the suspect vehicle and driver.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "We are also requesting the public’s assistance to help identify the vehicle and driver.

"The suspect vehicle is described as a white van with broken wing mirror and cracked windscreen with a possible partial registration of AP17.

"The suspect driver is described as a white male, short shaved dark brown or black hair, bushy moustache and beard, aged in his 50's, wearing a black and red chequered shirt and grey jogging bottoms."
